Artist's Statement How about an artist's question?
I find artistic expression in the daily experience of life - Thoreau said "to paint the atmosphere in which we work, to affect the quality of the day" was the highest of the arts. The American transcendental tradition (Emerson, Thoreau) reveals a depth of meaning in life largely missing in our culture, yet accepted in its time. Values in my experience this year: Universal citizenship.
Biography I am principal of Redesign Research, a consulting practice for interactive product design, customer research and innovation strategy. My projects include user experience research for web-based product concepts, creative approaches to product and usability evaluation, field evaluation of product strategy, and user interface redesign for business and information services websites. A designer and consultant in information product development, I've designed custom and commercial products, websites, and information services for large firms and start-ups. I authored Team Design: A Practitioner’s Guide to Collaborative Product Development originally published in 1998 and revised for 2002. I occasionally instruct classes in Human-Computer Interaction, and conduct educational and participatory workshops in software design and product innovation. I regularly publish articles and lecture in HCI, design strategy, and design processes, extending from my interests in design and innovation management. My dissertation at The Union Institute investigated how organizational values become embedded in processes and affect product design and innovation practices. A few years before I completed Master’s research (Experimental Psychology - Human Factors) at The University of Dayton, with a thesis on the relationship of interface design and training on user's mental models and performance.
